Fall Home and Garden Transition: Essential Checklist

The Fall Transition Checklist

As temperatures drop, your home and garden need different types of protection than they did in summer. This comprehensive checklist covers everything from outdoor plumbing to tool storage, ensuring your property enters winter in peak condition.

Outdoor Plumbing Protection

Drain and Disconnect Hoses

Before the first freeze, disconnect all garden hoses and drain them. Store hoses indoors or in a heated garage. Frozen water in hoses can burst spigots and cause expensive interior damage.

Winterize Outdoor Faucets

If you have frost-free hose bibs, they should be installed at an angle that allows water to drain when shut off. For standard faucets, install insulated covers before the first freeze.

Garden Bed Preparation

Clean Up Annuals

Remove spent annuals and vegetable plants that have stopped producing. Compost healthy material and discard anything diseased.

Mulch Perennials

After the ground freezes, apply three to four inches of mulch around perennial crowns to prevent frost heaving. Use shredded bark, straw, or leaves instead of whole leaves which mat down and block air.

Protect Tender Shrubs

Wrap newly planted or tender shrubs like roses and hydrangeas with burlap or anti-desiccant spray to prevent winter burn from harsh winds.

Tool Maintenance

  • Clean soil from all tools with a wire brush
  • Sharpen pruner blades and mower blades
  • Oil wooden handles with linseed oil to prevent cracking
  • Drain fuel from gas-powered equipment or add stabilizer
  • Store tools in a dry location since moisture causes rust

Irrigation System Winterization

Blow out sprinkler systems with compressed air before the first freeze. Even a small amount of trapped water can crack PVC pipes and valves. If you do not have a compressor, hire an irrigation professional.

Indoor Plant Transition

Before bringing tropical plants indoors for winter:

  • Inspect thoroughly for pests like aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites
  • Treat with insecticidal soap if any pests are found
  • Repot if roots are circling the container
  • Place in the brightest location available with south-facing window ideal
Winter prep is like insurance. The small time investment now prevents costly repairs and plant losses during the cold months.
