How to Identify and Control Japanese Beetles

Japanese Beetle Identification
Japanese beetles are metallic green with copper-brown wing covers. They're about half an inch long and appear in summer, feeding on over 300 plant species.
Damage Signs
Leaves show skeletonized feeding — tissue eaten between veins, leaving a lace-like pattern. Flowers are often eaten entirely. Damage appears rapidly during peak activity (July-August).
Control Methods
Hand Picking
Drop beetles into soapy water each morning when they're less active. Most effective in early infestations.
Neem Oil
Applied every 5-7 days, neem oil stops beetles from feeding and reproducing.
Beneficial Nematodes
Apply to soil in spring and fall. Nematodes kill beetle grubs before they become adults.
Trap Plants
Plant geraniums or zinnias away from prized plants to lure beetles away. Trap crops should be removed and destroyed.
What NOT to Do
Avoid pheromone traps — they attract MORE beetles to your yard from surrounding areas. Skip broad-spectrum insecticides, which kill beneficial insects.
Long-Term Prevention
- Maintain healthy soil to support strong plants
- Choose resistant varieties when possible
- Apply milky spore to lawn to kill grubs
