Mosquito Control: Reduce Mosquitoes in Your Yard

Why Mosquitoes Choose Your Yard
Mosquitoes need standing water to breed and shade to rest during the day. If your property has both, you are hosting a mosquito nursery. Here is how to break the cycle.
Eliminate Standing Water Weekly
A mosquito can go from egg to adult in just 7 days in a bottle cap of water. Walk your property weekly and empty anything that holds water: plant saucers, bird baths, buckets, wheelbarrows, clogged gutters, and children's toys.
Treat Water You Cannot Empty
For ponds, rain barrels, and decorative fountains, use Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) dunks or granules. Bti is a naturally occurring bacterium that kills mosquito larvae but is harmless to pets, birds, and beneficial insects. One dunk treats 100 square feet for 30 days.
Reduce Resting Areas
Adult mosquitoes rest in cool, shaded, humid areas during the hottest parts of the day. Trim dense shrubbery, remove leaf litter, and keep grass mowed. Open, sunny areas are naturally mosquito-hostile.
Install Fans on Patios
Mosquitoes are weak fliers. A standard oscillating fan on your patio creates wind speeds mosquitoes cannot navigate. This is one of the simplest and most effective personal protection methods for outdoor gatherings.
Use Targeted Sprays
Barrier sprays containing bifenthrin or lambda-cyhalothrin applied to shrub undersides, fence lines, and deck railings kill resting adult mosquitoes on contact. Effects last 2–4 weeks. Apply in the evening when mosquitoes become active.
Attract Natural Predators
Bats, dragonflies, and certain bird species consume hundreds of mosquitoes daily. Install a bat house 15 feet high on a south-facing pole. Add a small water feature to attract dragonflies. Plant lavender, marigolds, and citronella — while their repellent effect is mild, they do attract predatory insects.
What Does Not Work
- Ultrasonic repellents: No scientific evidence of effectiveness
- Bug zappers: Kill beneficial insects far more than mosquitoes
- Vitamin B1 supplements: Studies show no reduction in bites
- Citronella candles alone: Effective only within 1–2 feet of the flame
