Why Aphids Are a Problem

Aphids are tiny, soft-bodied insects that suck sap from new growth. A single female can produce 80 offspring per week, and their honeydew attracts sooty mold and ants.

Identifying Aphid Damage

Look for curled, yellowing, or distorted leaves, especially on tender new shoots. Check the undersides of leaves — aphids cluster in colonies of green, black, red, or brown insects.

Organic Treatment Options

Insecticidal Soap

Mix 1-2 tablespoons of pure castile soap per quart of water. Spray directly on aphids — the soap dissolves their protective coating. Reapply every 3-5 days until the colony is gone.

Ladybugs

Release ladybugs at dusk near infested plants. A single ladybug eats up to 50 aphids per day. Plant dill, fennel, and yarrow nearby to keep them in your garden.

Garlic Spray

Blend 2 garlic bulbs with water, strain, and dilute. The strong odor repels aphids and other soft-bodied pests. Apply weekly as a preventive measure.
