Signs Your Tree Needs Professional Removal

When Tree Removal Is Necessary

Not every damaged tree needs to come down, but certain conditions make removal the safest option. Recognizing these signs early protects your home and family.

Critical Warning Signs

Leaning Trunk

A sudden lean, especially with exposed roots or heaving soil on the opposite side, indicates root failure. Trees that lean more than 15 degrees from vertical are at high risk of falling.

Hollow Trunk

If more than 30-40% of the trunk is hollow, the tree has lost critical structural strength. Tap the trunk — a hollow sound suggests internal decay that may not be visible from outside.

Large Dead Branches

Multiple dead branches in the canopy, especially over your home or driveway, create falling hazard. Dead wood becomes brittle and unpredictable in wind.

Fungal Growth at the Base

Mushrooms or conks growing at the tree base indicate root rot. By the time fruiting bodies appear, significant internal damage has already occurred.
